Fall is in the air

What a fast September!
We spent the month continuing routines and expectations- as well as earning money for our school! Our first ever Walk-a-Thon was a huge success! Together, we raised over $20,000 to put towards Prairie View. We have started our purchases with two sets of matching classroom chairs. We are also purchasing a portable sound system as we have been borrowing for all our events! We will also set a focus on our back blacktop, new basketball hoops, a canopy for the structured learning area and updating our play equipment (not the playground). Thank you thank you for all the donations and communication out to family and friends who also donated. This does not happen without our amazing families.

During the month of October, we will begin our student of the month recognition. At the end of each month, we recognize students that demonstrate our district core values. This month we are focused on a GROWTH MINDSET! We hope our students learn that mistakes are good and challenges are opportunities for growth. We may not be good at something just YET, but with hard work and perseverance, we will be.

I am so excited about our next family event Books and Boo's -Trunk or Treat! See below for more information. We will have a monster entering PV this week and we will fill him up with candy for this event! If you are able to donate a bag of candy, please send it in with your student and they will come to the office and 'feed the monster'. Please keep in mind the PPA will raise funds separately from our building Walk-A-Thon. Any support is appreciated!

One last note - PV is still looking for some evening help with cleaning our building. Hours are 2:00-10:30 PM, but can be flexible if needed. Please reach out to me if you are interested in this position,

PPA News

Our next PPA Meeting is October 7 at 4:30 PM at Prairie View and ALL parents are welcome! You don’t have to sign up for a committee or commit to volunteering to join us. Come hang out, hear what we’re working on, share an idea or opinion, help us brainstorm, or simply see what PPA is all about. Our meetings are casual, relaxed, and always better with more voices around the table. We would truly love to have you!

More Than a Fundraiser
One of our biggest goals this year is to make fundraising feel a little different. We want to create family events for all to attend so every Prairie View family feels welcome, spend time together, and be part of our school community.
We want to help create experiences, traditions and memories for our kids. When you grab concessions at Movie Night, participate in BOO-tober, visit us at Family Night, or support one of our other fundraisers, those dollars still go directly back into Prairie View PPA to support student experiences.

Welcome to BOO-tober!

We’re excited to bring back Boo Grams this year but we’re turning them into a whole month of Halloween fun with BOO-tober! Throughout October, families can send a little spooky cheer with a $1 Boo Bestie ghost sucker, a $3 Squishy Boo, a $5 Boo for any member of our Prairie View Crew, or a $20 Classroom Boo. Please check your students backpack for more information about purchasing Boo Grams.
This is an optional activity.
Thank you in advance for supporting the PPA!

Books & Boo's Family night

We have SO much planned for our first ever Books & Boo's (trunk or treat). Local businesses and community friends will be joining us with fun vehicles to explore and goodies for the kids,  along with Trunk-or-Treat, costumes, concessions, the Book Fair and plenty of family fun! We are looking for families to decorate a trunk and pass out candy, as well as volunteers to help with the Book Fair and throughout the event. Candy will be provided to our trunk volunteers, so all you need to bring is your decorated trunk and some Halloween spirit!

To decorate a trunk - Sign up here

Our Candy Monster will be making its Prairie View debut this month!  The monster will be collecting candy donations to help us stock up for Trunk-or-Treat during our Fall Family Night & Book Fair on Friday, October 23 from 4:30–7:00 PM.

A Note From PE

Mrs. Martin

For the month of October, students will continue working on soccer skills and will apply these skills to game-like activities. We will then transfer into applying correct throwing and catching techniques. Students will get many opportunities to use a variety of objects to throw and catch and will use many different sizes, shapes, and levels of targets to aim at. Cooperating, taking turns, and being a good sport throughout these activities will be expected.

We have been dedicating Thursday’s as our cardiovascular fitness day’s and Friday’s as our all around fitness/agility station days. On these days students have been learning useful fitness terms and skills that they can use in their daily lives to help keep them active and healthy.

At the end of the month, students will get the chance to participate in Halloween themed games.

We are excited to celebrate our top finishers from the Pacer Test Run for grades 1-4. We will be running this each trimester to monitor growth. Winners brought home a certificate showing their hard work. Their effort and perseverance are wonderful examples of growth mindset and healthy habits! Congratulations to each student who participated and to those who improved their lap scores! We are proud of their hard work and drive for improvement!

Transportation

Changes in Transportation
When there is a change in your student's transportation, please send an email to your student(s) teacher and kpetrak@sandwich430.org so the office is aware as well. In an emergency, please get in touch with the school office no later than 2:00 pm so we can notify our staff and ensure your child's safe dismissal. If the school does not have notice of a change in transportation, a student will be sent home in their typical fashion.

*School supervision of students begins at 7:45. They will be let in the building at 7:55.
CLASS BEGINS AT 8:05

*If your student arrives after the 8:05 bell, you must accompany your student to the front doors of the school and ring the bell. You will be required to sign your student in at the front office.

*If your student needs to leave school before the end of the day, please call the office and email your child's teacher. When picking them up, please come to the front doors, and someone in the office will assist you in signing your student out for the day. Your child will be called to the office when you arrive.

District Attendance Policy

Attendance makes a difference

The district worked closely with the Regional Office of Education to create an attendance policy that is more aligned with the rest of the county. Our goal is to reduce the number of Chronic Absentee students within the district.

  • CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM- a student who misses 10 percent of school days (18) within an academic year with or without a valid excuse. According to school research, these students are at greater risk of educational loss. Students within this category are reported to the state and monitored on the district/school report card.

To achieve this goal, we updated our attendance policy to create systems of support to monitor attendance and support families. The biggest changes are outlined below for families. Additional details can be found in the student handbook for each school.

  • All excused absences count toward a student's total of 10 days of absence.
  • After 10 absences, the district will ask for a doctor's note for future absences.
  • All absences must be reported daily by 10:00 AM
  • If a student is not reported absent by 10:00 AM the district will begin to identify the student’s location and reason for the absence.
  • Parents/Guardians will be contacted first.
  • If no one can be reached, we will contact emergency contacts.
  • If no one can still be reached, we will contact the district SRO to do a safety check at the student’s home.
  • Support for student absences will begin at the seventh absence of the school year.

Please help us achieve a positive school outcome through consistent student attendance. This is a significant predictor of student and school success. If someone in your family is unable to attend school for the day, it will be important that you report the absence by 10:00 AM.

Building Safety

Our district follows a security protocol for guests and volunteers entering the buildings. This system requires identification from visitors (i.e. state ID, driver’s license, etc.), and all visitors will be photographed. A quick background check will be performed by searching US sex offender databases (with the option to expand this to criminal databases.). The system also links with our student database to provide an extra layer of protection for students with no contact orders.

To help make the start of the school year as smooth as possible, families who plan to volunteer in classrooms, attend classroom celebrations, or chaperone field trips are encouraged to complete this visitor screening during Stop N' Drop or Curriculum Night. Completing the process early will help ensure quick and easy entry into the building for future school events throughout the year.
